The Great Zimbabwe University Council, commissioned and sworn into office on 29 October 2025 by the Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science and Technology Development, Honourable Ambassador Dr Frederick Shava, held its inception meeting on Friday, 21 November 2025, at the Herbert Chitepo Law School Boardroom.
During the meeting, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Rungano Zvobgo, together with members of his management team, officially welcomed the new Council. The Council is led by Professor Mandivamba Rukuni, who was reappointed as both a Council member and the Council Chairman.
The new Great Zimbabwe University Council comprises Professor Mandivamba Rukuni, Professor Rudo Irene Makunike-Mutasa, Dr Matthews Tichaona Kunaka, Dr Ing Farai Karonga, Dr Enos Mutambu Shumba, Dr Susan Dimbi, Dr Polex Moyo, Mrs Siphathisiwe Mguni-Maisiri, Mrs Emilliah S. Mabika, Mr Phinias Mamwa, Mr Jonathan Benjamin Rushwaya, Mr Vusumuzi Mpofu, Mr Divine Ngwenya and Mr Wikirefu Sonono.
Following the meeting, Council members conducted an appreciation tour of selected University facilities.
